A Town House is
superbly
situated with
a wonderful
view over historic Ohinemutu
Ohinemutu is the
original settlement of Rotorua, the modern town being laid out nearby
as the population grew.
You can walk through the village and Te Papaiouru Marae, visiting beautifully decorated St
Faith's Church and maybe see some traditional carvers in their
workshop below Whakaturia Dining Room. Facing the church is
Tama Te Kapua, the premier meeting house of the district. There is a
fee charged for touring the village.
Maori settled in
Ohinemutu because they could build their homes on warm ground, there
were boiling pools and steam vents where food could be cooked and plenty of warm
water for bathing. There was food in the lake and they could
travel by canoe over a wide area. Homes in the village
are still heated geothermally and everyone can bathe in warm spring water.
Rotorua is the
original tourist attraction of New Zealand. The Pink and White
Terraces drew visitors from around the world until they were
destroyed by the eruption of Tarawera in 1886. Continuing from that
time, the Maori people of the district have guided and entertained visitors
with displays of the culture that is still an integral part of their
lives.
